• Improve the knowledge and capabilities for the quantitative and qualitative detection of CECs and their transformation products in water bodies, through research and the development of technologies, protocols, tools, and methodologies that offer automation, efficiency, and cost reduction.
• Enhance contaminant monitoring capacities.
• Promote the exchange of knowledge, experience, and information among organizations working in this field.
• Disseminate the capabilities of organizations regarding contaminant detection and monitoring.
• Foster collaboration among network members to improve and facilitate the implementation of water quality and wastewater treatment regulations concerning contaminant detection and tracking.

This strategic line aims primarily to assess and understand the effects of the presence of CECs in water bodies and their potential impacts on marine and coastal ecosystems, as well as on human health. It seeks to be a meeting forum between organizations responsible for water quality monitoring and management, and those developing knowledge, studies, and ecotoxicological tools to evaluate the risks and impacts of contaminants in the aquatic environment.

Specific objectives:

• Improve knowledge of contaminant toxicity and bioaccumulation across different trophic levels and the maximum concentration at which no adverse effects on biota are observed (“predicted no-effect concentration” – PNECs).
• Enhance understanding of the risks and impacts of contaminant mixtures.
• Promote the use of ecotoxicological tools in contaminant monitoring systems for water bodies.
• Encourage the use of ecotoxicological tools in assessing the efficiency of treatments implemented at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).
• Improve prediction capabilities regarding contaminant presence and distribution through modelling tools.
• Disseminate the capacities of organizations in developing and applying ecotoxicological tools and environmental risk assessments.
• Promote collaboration and knowledge exchange between network members to facilitate the implementation of EU legislation on risk prevention and mitigation of impacts of CECs on water bodies.

This strategic line aims to improve knowledge about urban water treatment technologies, with a special focus on advanced treatments, including specific technologies and their combinations, to remove emerging contaminants. It also seeks to promote the use of reclaimed water by analyzing the treatment level required for different intended uses. 

Specific objectives: 

• Enhance understanding of the effectiveness of different technologies, whether used individually or in combination, to remove emerging contaminants. 
• Increase knowledge about the impact of implementing advanced treatments from both economic and environmental perspectives (life cycle analysis). 
• Share experiences and knowledge regarding the implementation of technologies and the development of water reuse projects, including public acceptance of such solutions. 
• Establish synergies between wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operators and developers of treatment technologies. 
• Support the implementation of the requirements of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive and the Water Reuse Regulation (2020/741). 
• Promote water reuse through the development of new pilot and demonstration projects.
